Award-winning Vietnam War documentary Winter Soldier with panel discussion to follow at OWU - April 27

One of the most powerful documentaries about war ever made, Winter Soldier, was released 34 years ago but has rarely been seen in this country. This award-winning and recently re-released documentary, which is based on the testimony of Vietnam War Veterans, will be shown on Thursday April 27 (doors open at 6PM; film begins 6:30PM).

The film chronicles the Winter Soldier Investigation organized by Vietnam Veterans against the War, including a younger John Kerry, took place during February 1971 in a motel in Detroit. More than 125 veterans testified to atrocities committed during the Vietnam War at the Winter Soldier inquiry.

A panel discussion with Veterans who participated in the Winter Soldier Investigations will follow the film. Panelists include Marine Sergeant Scott Camil, whom The Washington Post called, "one of the film’s most eloquent witnesses, Marine Sergeant Joe Bangert who was part of the Winterfilm Collective of filmmakers, which created and archived the original documentary. Randy ‘Doc’ Barnes, former military medic, Winter Soldier investigator, and current Board Member of Vietnam Veterans of America; and Gary Staiger former Air Force medic from Dayton, Ohio who testified on the Medical Panel.

Although the film was released in 1972, it has only recently been shown to the American public. This past year, Winter Soldier was featured at the Lincoln Center, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Wexner Center at Ohio State University. However, not even these prominent venues have held a post-screening panel discussion like the one lined up for OWU.
